Considered one of the most prestigious golf course in Italy, Marco Simone Golf Club, home of the 2022 Ryder Cup, is a must play if your are planning a golf vacation in "The Eternal City".
The club will be the third venue in continental Europe to host the tournament, following 1997 host Club de Golf Valderrama in Spain and Le Golf National in France, which will host the tournament in 2018.
Italy was selected on December 2015 ahead of Austria, Germany and Spain to host the 44th edition of the tournament, with the decision being made by a Bid Evaluation Committee comprised of representatives from the European Tour and the Ryder Cup.
Located just 11 miles from downtown Rome, the course, designed by architect Jim Fazio, has been opened in 1989.
The Championship Course (6343 m - 6937 yds CR 72,4 SR 140) is a true test even for the low handicap golfer.
Its challenging and engaging layout features tree-lined narrow fairways, lakes, and several elevation changes.
Every hole has its own distinctive peculiarity and playing this course is always a great experience.
Marco Simone GC  is named after an 11th century castle that is located right on the course with its tower visible from many holes (today Marco Simone Castle is the house of the golf course owner, fashion designer Laura Biagiotti).
The 1st hole is an interesting 500 meters long downhill par 5 which turns slightly to the right towards a small green protected by a lake and several bunkers. The 2nd hole can be considered the signature hole, or better the most photographed hole of the course, a beautiful 170 meters par 3 with a small lake protecting the green and Marco Simone Castle on the backgrounds. The par 4 4th is one of the most fascinating holes, not long but impressive with its massive bunker complex protecting the elevated green.
My favourite is the 501 meters 16th, a fantastic and demanding uphill par 5, reminding Jumeirah Earth's 18th, with a narrow creek running all the way from tee to green requesting real accuracy.
Some of the main features of Marco Simone are the spaciousness of the property with great views of the surroundings and the breathtaking views of the Eternal City from the highest tee boxes. In a clear day Rome and St. Peter's Basilica can be seen from the 17th and 18th tees.
The Championship course will be completely renovated ahead of the tournament according to an official release from the Ryder Cup. More details on which firm is likely to lead this project will be released in due course.
